And I'm Back!

Last  night I went for a run.

It was cold and snowy and windy.

The look of a cold and wind blown runner who is finally running again.
It was also fantastic!

I ran without pain for the first time in over a month. It may have only been three miles, and I may have been moving incredibly slowly, but it still felt awesome. Yes, it felt more difficult than I remember, but at least it didn't hurt.

I'm looking forward to hopefully starting the long process of getting back to my usual mileage and pace, but I'll be better about taking rest and recovery more seriously this time.

I Miss Running

Since finishing the F^3 Half in January, I haven't been running very much.

AND IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!

I miss running. A lot. It is a form of stress relief for me, and my efforts at cross training just don't seem to relax me the way that running does.

I know I should see someone about my leg to figure out what is going on, but my anxiety about doctors has so far prevented this from happening. I've basically been hoping that my leg will heal itself with rest. I'm both happy and surprised to say that it seems to be working. My leg feels a million times better than it did a few weeks ago. It no longer hurts all the time, I'm able to walk without pain, and it now really only hurts when I try to run.

Yes, I have attempted to run a couple of times since the half, even though I know I shouldn't. I'm both stubborn and in denial, which is a bad combination. Both times were painful, so I kept mileage really low (no more than 3 miles) and went really slowly.

While I'm not running, I'm also reacquainting myself with the gym because I don't want to lose fitness. Strength training, spin classes, and some time spent on the rowing machine are helping me stay active. I'm also going for long walks each night after dinner to get outside for at least a little bit each day. Finally, I'm stretching and foam rolling every day. My foam roller and I now have a love/hate relationship.

I was hoping to run the Live Grit Lakefront 10 Miler this year, but it looks like that won't be happening, as there just isn't time left to properly train for it, especially when I'm still hurting. I'm trying to be okay with that, but it is still disappointing.

I've promised myself that I'll finally get my leg checked out if it is still bothering me by the end of next week, as that will have been about a month of me being unable to run the way that I want to. I also have some friends trying to convince me to give massage a try or to visit a chiropractor to see if that will help. I'm not completely sold on either idea, but I may be willing to give it a try at least once.

I'll keep you updated.
